Menecmi is a comedy written by Plautus towards the end of the 3rd century BC. The name derives from that of the two main characters, who are twin brothers. The comedy deals with the loss and abduction of Menecmo I and the vicissitudes that allow the two twins to meet again and return home together. Plautus builds the prototype of the comedy of misunderstandings around the homonymy and extraordinary resemblance between the two brothers, similar in genre to Amphitryon and The Bacchides: the appearance of Menecmo II, who has never stopped looking for his brother, in Epidamno, where Menecmo I has created his new life, triggers a series of confusing situations, which are necessarily comical.
