TROJAN WOMEN
by Euripides

A NEW PRODUCTION OF KERKÍS. TEATRO ANTICO IN SCENA

Photos by Artphotogram

In the aftermath of the fall of Troy, the smoking ruins of the city provide the backdrop for the drama of the Trojan women who survived the war, now prisoners of the Greek victors. Deprived of everything but their voices, the protagonists await the verdict of the Achaeans, who will decide their fates: slavery, exile, death.

In this new production by Kerkís, the sounds, songs and costumes that bring the Trojan women to life are inspired by ancient Albanian tradition, as an alternative, archaic and visceral language that gives voice and body to the innocent and defenceless victims of foreign conquest. In this vision, the word “Troia” – which in archaic Albanian (troje, trojet) means “land”, “homeland”, “foundation” – takes on a powerful and evocative symbolic value, rooted in the sense of belonging to the land and in collective memory.
