ABOUT US
KERKÍS. TEATRO ANTICO IN SCENA is a non-profit cultural association based in Milan, founded on 9th December 2011 by a group of professors, students and former students of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan. Its articles of association were filed on 2 January 2012 in Merate (LC) - Registration application no. 21079519220131028 of 28/10/2013 as a Provincial Social Promotion Association of MI.
As stated in Article 3 of its Statute, its purpose is to promote the staging of plays from the classical Greek and Latin tradition and any subsequent reworkings thereof, without forgetting other performative aspects created by ancient culture such as mime, philosophical dialogue, narration, epic poetry and oratory.
It is registered in the Registro Unico Nazionale del Terzo Settore (RUNTS) and in the Milan provincial register of social and cultural promotion associations. Since 2018, Kerkís has been affiliated with F.I.T.A.
Its sphere of influence extends throughout Milan, nationally and internationally, and its activities range from educational to artistic.
The primary aim is to cultivate an appreciation for the texts of Greek and Latin antiquity that have come down to us. The actors, musicians, playwrights, costume designers and set designers who make up Kerkís are trained to tackle the complexities and subtleties of classical drama through a serious technique combined with scientific research and teaching activities that, with reference to Greek and Latin theatre, take place at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.
The second, but not least important, aim is to offer performances that can bring to the contemporary theatre stage dramas capable of surprising, communicating ideas and emotions, stirring creativity in the audience, and bringing to light the roots in which we discover ourselves to be heirs to a civilisation that is arcane but still present, alive and dynamic, thanks to which we can recognise and establish our identity.
Through its initiatives, the Association has become an important meeting place for many young people and, at the same time, is able to involve people of other ages who attend the theatre. Thanks to its contacts with school teachers, it attracts many students, including those from the most disadvantaged social groups.
KERKÍS. TEATRO ANTICO IN SCENA has had the opportunity over the years to collaborate with organisations covering various sectors, including the school and education sector, through the creation of theatre workshops aimed at young students.
